An increase in algae growth which, at worst, can result in the eutrophication of surface waters, is one of the consequences of the high levels of phosphate.
Currently, the phosphate removal is mainly performed through the chemical precipitation of phosphorus, carried out by means of polyvalent cation salts which, combining with phosphorus, are able to form poorly soluble phosphates.
